Kel-Tec SU-16E

Oleg Volk has a wallpaper posted that alerts me to the latest Kel-Tec rifle, the SU-16E. The newest iteration of the SU-16 line of rifles has replaced the fixed stock with a “tactical” 6-position stock and has added a pistol grip, as well as handguards with a rail on the bottom:

I see what they’re trying to do. They see the massive demand and shortage of supply for AR/AK type rifles, and are hoping to market the SU-16 as a low-cost alternative that takes AR-15 magazines and ammunition. They might well be able to pull that off.

I’ve been eyeing the SU-16B as an inexpensive and very portable (it folds in half) trunk gun, but one of the disadvantages of it is the lack of a place to mount a light:

Thing is, I don’t need or want the pistol grip or collapsable stock (the fixed stocks allow for storage of a 20-round magazine on the gun, which is handy since the magazine well is inaccessible when the firearm is folded). If they would put the handguards on a rifle with a traditional stock and no pistol grip, they’d have a winner in my book.

You can get the rail forend separately from Kel-tec web site. That’s what I did with a 16CA model.

I just got thru reading a thread on “show us your SU” and most of the mods looked like this! Just add a scop and a bipod, and it would look like the average posting.
They don’t need a full under rail though. Just enough to attach a bipod.

And the other thing missing is a flash supressor.

THE PROBLEM IS, THERE ARE OVER 35 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, AND HAVING A PISTOL GRIP WITH A DETACHABLE MAG IS ILLEGAL/ BANNED. THAT IS THE REASON WHY I’M BUYING A KEL-TECH IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

I don’t like this new version. Sure, its what the average person on the Kel Tec Owners Group (KTOG) forum is posting for what their gun looks like, but it is at the same time going AWAY from what sets Kel Tec away from everyone else- a semi-auto rifle that is not banned by the “Assault Weapons Ban” states like California. PLUS, being able to store a magazine or two in the stock is another difference and a great reason to buy a Kel Tec (KT).
Furthormore it looks to be a collasping/ telescoping stock, and not a folding one, yet another thing that went in KT’s favor.
Hmmm, I’m not liking this at all.

The ONLY good thing this version has going for it is that you don’t have to assemble the “after market” stuff yourself / buy for parts you’re going to replace anyways. AKA a cheap(er) AR-15 clone.

** Here’s something weird, I viewed KT’s web site again, and I saw NO mention of this version. What’s up with that? Is this thing real?

    PS
They have released their really expensive 7.62 s/a rifle though, the RFB18, or the The RFB (Rifle, Forward-ejection, Bullpup).

Iv’e recently purchased a su 16A and i think the E style stock is a great idea (prehapse a bit expensive, at $130 on the kel tec website). This would greatly improve the comfort of the rifle especialy when hunting.

P.S. kel tec should offer a 5 rd mag on the website for hunting and should also come out with a quad rail fore end for the su-16

  5. This is really enlightening. Wonderful work!

Just got the pistol grip and stock. $130 is cheap, The quality is there. That’s one thing I like about kel-tec they sell you the complete product and all related parts too. Like I said $130 is not that bad. You can piss that away on a night out.
